Please be aware the South Carolina Workers’ Compensation Commission is currently considering updates to its Medical Services Provider Manual. Among the proposed changes, the Commission is considering requiring prior authorization for “all medications or drugs dispensed as a part of a pain management program.” This proposal is particularly concerning in that it appears to be nothing more than a tactic for payors to delay or deny any medications dispensed by providers.
A summary of the proposed changes to the Manual may be found here: http://www.wcc.sc.gov/Documents/What%27s%20New/Medical%20Services%20Notices/Posting%202017%20MSPM%20Fee%20Schedule%2007-20-17%20FINAL.pdf (pain management can be found on the top of page 4).
Interested parties are requested to submit written comments on the proposed changes by email to Kim Ballentine at firstname.lastname@example.org no later than August 11.
The Commission will consider final approval of the proposed changes at the Business Meeting on August 21. The proposed changes are scheduled to go into effect on September 1, 2017.
